David Moller Wolfe dubs Leeds United ace Leo Hjelde ‘Brexit centre-back’ after 7-0 win

AZ Alkmaar’s Norwegian left-back David Moller Wolfe has dubbed Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde a “Brexit centre-back” after his performance in their 7-0 victory against Latvia Under-21s on 12 August.

Hjelde and Wolfe lined up alongside each other as they kept a clean sheet in the heavy victory, and their friendship off the pitch is clear, with the comment made on Hjelde’s Instagram post following the game.

The 20-year-old has made just one league appearance in Daniel Farke’s side so far this season, although he could be set for further involvement as the squad gets rotated throughout the difficult winter months.

Commenting on Hjelde’s Instagram post on 12 August, Wolfe wrote: “My Brexit centre-back”, bantering the Leeds United man about his solid defensive performance which earned their side a clean sheet – always something to celebrate for defenders.

A dependable performance from the Leeds man

The phrase is typically used to describe a no-nonsense type of performance, with Hjelde’s strong and resolute defensive style the inspiration behind this comment, as he got the job done in an impressive for his side.

Hjelde will be looking to reclaim his starting place in Farke’s side, where he has been used at left-back this season in all three of his starts against Cardiff in the Championship, and Shrewsbury and Salford both in the Carabao Cup.

Playing in the centre of defence as he did for his country’s under-21 side may be his preferred position, and he will be hoping to find some minutes to impress his manager in that role as the season drags on, with rotation likely to be necessary as the fixtures start to build up.

He lost his place at left-back in the Championship fixtures after a shaky display against Cardiff, with Sam Byram taking his place as the more specialist full-back, but Jamie Shackleton was tested in that role against Sheffield Wednesday in a surprise choice from the boss.
