Danny Murphy: Leeds new signing one of the bargains of the season after what he did vs Newcastle
Danny Murphy has been left blown away by what he saw as Leeds United drew to Newcastle.
Leeds secured a point against Newcastle in a hard-fought affair at Elland Road as Daniel Farke’s side made it four points from three Premier League games.
Farke opted to utilise Jack Harrison from the bench against Newcastle in a surprise move as Noah Okafor and Joel Piroe remained on the bench for the full 90.
This saw the Farke share his desire for further signings at Leeds before the window slams shut on 1 September.
With that being said, Murphy has shared his belief that the Whites have already landed one of the best pieces of business in the entire division.
Danny Murphy piles praise on Leeds recruitment
There is no getting away from the transfer business that the LS11 club have had to complete since earning promotion to the Premier League.
This has seen 10 fresh faces come in through the door in Yorkshire, with more potentially set to join them before the window slams shut on 1 September.
Leeds United summer signings at this stage of the window:
- Lukas Nmecha
- Jaka Bijol
- Sebastiaan Bornauw
- Gabriel Gudmundsson
- Sean Longstaff
- Anton Stach
- Lucas Perri
- Dominic Calvert-Lewin
- Noah Okafor
- James Justin
Despite the potential of more, Murphy has stuck his neck out on the line to back Sean Longstaff after Leeds signed him from Newcastle earlier in the summer.
This saw Longstaff thrive against his former club in the Premier League, much to the delight of the former Liverpool midfielder while speaking via Match of the Day on 30 August.
He said: “Longstaff is going to be one of the bargains of the summer. I think it was around £12m, rising to £15m.
“He was terrific for a couple of seasons at Newcastle and deserves all the plaudits. I thought he was outstanding today.”

Sean Longstaff proves himself for Leeds United vs Newcastle
Despite a fairly cheap transfer fee, there were still some reservations when the midfielder came through the doors at Thorp Arch in July.
This was due to his lack of regular minutes last season at St James’ Park as Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali were favoured.
With that being said, any concerns over his addition have vanished after he put in a stellar performance for the Whites against the Magpies.
Stat vs Newcastle United | Sean Longstaff |
Pass accuracy (%) | 86 |
Chances created | 1 |
Tackles won | 4 |
Recoveries | 6 |
Duels won | 8 |
This saw him perform at a top level alongside Anton Stach and Ilia Gruev as Leeds secured a point against the Champions League outfit.
If the Englishman can maintain that level, there is no reason why he can’t prove Murphy right and represent excellent business and a real coup.
