Danny Murphy steps in after Jim White takes stupid dig at Leeds ace after talkSPORT interview
Leeds United fans don’t have a great relationship with Jim White and the talkSPORT broadcaster was doing nothing to change their minds this morning.
After a slightly awkward interview with Ben White on the White & Sawyer show (Monday 10am), the talkSPORT host said, “I think Ben must have just got out of bed to be fair to him Danny [Murphy]. It’s not often that you get to ask 10 questions in a two-minute chat.”
Murphy stepped in quickly to defend the player.
“Now let’s be nice, it’s always a bit nerve-wracking. I get more nervous when I get a call from another show asking me to come on and talk about Liverpool. I get more nervous on the phone miles away than I do in the studio.
“When you’re a young player like that… he’s just a bit embarrassed and that’s a nice trait.”
The majority of the interview was about the story that went viral over the weekend about the young Leeds fan who sent a letter to Brighton asking if they’d sell him for £15.
But White also said how much he’s enjoying life at Leeds – which is exactly what the fans want to hear.
“Yeah, it’s been really good,” [Ben] White said. “It’s gone really well so far and hopefully we can get it over the line and get the job done.”
We’re going to give Jim White the benefit of the doubt here and say that we don’t think he meant to be so cutting.
But it was a stupid thing to say when a young player has gone out of his way to provide you with content.
Some Leeds fans were less forgiving and one summed up how he felt on Twitter.
You can’t blame him for taking that view.
We’re happy that Ben White’s skills are on the pitch, not off it, and we hope that Murphy’s words will make him feel a bit better.
It’s likely to be a bit embarrassing for the player and Jim White really should know better.
