Danny Murphy backs Sam Allardyce to keep Leeds United job and earn promotion next season if relegated from Premier League
Leeds United should keep Sam Allardyce as manager even if they’re relegated as he would bring them back to the Premier League, says Danny Murphy.
Big Sam was brought in with four games to go to try and avoid the drop, but suffered defeat to top of the table Manchester City in his first game in charge on Saturday (6 May).
But writing in his Mail on Sunday column (7 May), BBC Match of the Day pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes if the Whites had hired him earlier in the season they would already be safe and urged the club to keep him on if they go down.

“I think it’s a great move by Leeds to bring him in. They should have done it sooner. They should have done it when Jesse Marsch was sacked,” he wrote.
“If Leeds had brought Allardyce in then, they would not be in this position now.
“Sam’s got a big job to do but there’s still a chance.
“Even if the worst should happen and Leeds go down, they could do worse than leaving him in charge. I think he’d bring them back up.”
Consider it
Allardyce is certainly not the type of manager that Leeds fans have become accustomed to in recent times with Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch playing intense, fast, attacking football.

But Allardyce’s experience is something that would certainly help to stabilise the club during a rocky period and his record proves he could very well get the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
That would allow the club to then bring someone else in with the long-term vision in place without risking too much.
It’s going to be hard enough to attract top players and managers to the club this summer because of the absolute show that has gone on at Elland Road this year, but Allardyce would provide a sense of familiarity.
He knows what he wants and we all know what to expect. Should the worst happen, then the club would be silly to not at least consider keeping him on for next season.
In other Leeds news, one star is already thinking about his future at the club after Allardyce’s arrival.
