Daniel Levy open to Mauricio Pochettino return at Tottenham as Leeds United stance emerges

Mauricio Pochettino taking the vacant head coach role at Leeds United was never a possibility, according to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs.

La Nación journalist, Claudio Mauri claimed (10 February) the former Spurs boss had been approached by the Leeds board over a return to the Premier League.

However, Jacobs has since revealed the 50-year-old doesn’t want to be dragged into a relegation battle and has suggested a return to Tottenham is certainly on the cards.

“My understanding is that he does not want to be dragged into a relegation battle or join a club without European football and that’s especially true mid-season,” said the CBS journalist (Caughtoffside Substack, 14 February).

“That’s why Everton was never a possibility and the same can be said for Leeds.

“There’s been talk of a Tottenham return and my understanding is that Daniel Levy would be extremely open to bringing Pochettino back should Antonio Conte leave.”

Fantisful

A move for Pochettino was a fanciful one from Leeds’ board and it feels as if it has been something conjured up by South American journalists without any real substance. The manager hunt has been a thankless task to date and right now it’s unclear where they will turn next.

Andoni Iraola, Arne Slot, Carlos Corberan and Marcelo Gallardo have all turned down the chance to move to Elland Road, and now Nuno Espírito Santo has emerged as a contender. Fans would be divided over the former Wolves manager, but his conservative style could well sure up the Whites’ rather leaky defence.

Talk of Pochettino needs to be shelved once and for all. The former Tottenham boss has shown no desire to return to the Premier League despite a number of jobs becoming available. He’s clearly waiting for a specific role to come up, and right now, Leeds’ situation isn’t a good fit for the Argentinian.
