Daniel Farke shows new side as Leeds United player brutally exposed for second time
Daniel Farke is not known for throwing his Leeds United players under the bus but he has now done it twice in less than a week.
Leeds drew 1-1 with Manchester United on Sunday, before conceding a last-minute goal to lose 4-3 away at Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.
Brenden Aaronson got a brace with Dominic Calvert-Lewin converting from the penalty spot as Farke’s side took the lead on three separate occasions.
However, Newcastle kept coming back, and Harvey Barnes dealt the killer blow in the 102nd minute to snatch a point away from the Whites.
Daniel Farke goes in on Lucas Perri
Lucas Perri has come in for some criticism in recent weeks, and his debut campaign for the West Yorkshire outfit hasn’t been without mistakes.
Farke slammed Perri after the draw with Man United for racing out of his goal and allowing Matheus Cunha to slide the ball into a half-empty net.
The Brazilian shot-stopper is now under-fire again, letting Barnes’ last-minute strike squirm under his hands and costing Leeds a point.
Speaking after the game, Farke decided not to protect his goalkeeper, instead coming out and placing the blame on Perri.
He said: “In this moment I can’t protect [Perri] from the criticism. He should have saved it.”
Daniel Farke has completely changed his tune
It is very out of character for Farke to throw one of his players under the bus, not least because of the events of last season.
Illan Meslier made a number of high-profile mistakes in the 2024-25 campaign, costing Leeds points on several occasions.
While the Whites did get promoted in the end, winning the Championship title, Meslier was widely criticised by fans.
However, unlike in this situation with Perri, Farke chose not to attack Meslier, instead standing by his goalkeeper.
After a draw with Hull City in January 2025, the German boss said: “We don’t change a goalkeeper quickly like a full-back. Straight after the game, I am not going to finger-point.”
Considering Farke’s recent comments, Perri must be wondering why he is getting wildly different treatment this season.
