Daniel Farke shares Lukas Nmecha injury update for Leeds vs Sunderland clash

Daniel Farke has provided an update on Lukas Nmecha’s availability for the clash with Sunderland on Sunday.

Farke has completely turned Leeds around in recent weeks, with two wins and two draws in their last four matches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s recent rise has been vital for Leeds, especially with Nmecha missing the last two matches with injury.

The in-form striker will hope to continue that form at the Stadium of Light on 28 December, but whether his partner will return for the contest is in doubt.

Farke shares Leeds latest for Sunderland after Palace exploits

Leeds secured a big win over Crystal Palace last time out, beating Oliver Glasner’s side 4-1 in a comfortable evening at Elland Road.

Farke has revealed that while Sean Longstaff and Dan James will absent, Nmecha could return against the Black Cats.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on 23 December, he said: “No chance for Sean [Longstaff], also not for Daniel James.

“There is a small chance for Lukas Nmecha to be involved, so there is some progress, I hope to have him at some point this week, back in team training.

“If he comes through the sessions, then he could definitely be a topic for the squad and travel with us, but he is more or less the only one from the long-term injuries, who could perhaps feature in this game.”

What is Leeds’ record like at Sunderland?

The Peacocks have a poor record when they visit the North East, with just two wins in their last six matches, dating back to 2004.

The last clash between the sides in October 2024 ended in a 2-2 draw, with the Mackems taking all three points the season before in a 1-0 win in December 2023.

The Whites did win in August 2017, when goals from Samu Saiz and Stuart Dallas secured the victory for the visitors.

Sunderland secured a 1-0 win in the FA Cup clash between the sides in January 2015, which was the first meeting between the sides since 2006.

The Black Cats beat the LS11 outfit 2-0 when they played in December 2006, but the visitors got the better of them when they faced off in December 2004, with a 3-2 victory.

Farke needs his side to step up and continue their momentum, and derail Regis Le Bris’ side’s brilliant start to the season.

It would be a real statement if they could get one over on the side that they finished 24 points above in the Championship last season, as ridiculous as that sounds.
