Daniel Farke shares fresh Leeds United transfer priority in new ‘helpful’ admission

Daniel Farke has revealed that he would ideally make some new defensive signings during the January transfer window but has insisted the deal will have to be right for Leeds United.

While Leeds have won each of their past three matches in all competitions, Farke has seen his defensive options limited with both Pascal Struijk and Liam Cooper battling with injuries while the departures of Luke Ayling and Djed Spence have exposed a lack of depth at right-back.

However, Leeds are yet to dip their toes into the transfer market so far this month and the German insisted that the group at Elland Road is currently strong enough should things remain that way in the closing stages of the window.

As quoted by Phil Hay on X on Friday (19 January) he said: “It’s not a concern. We have a quality group. We could do with more numbers in defensive positions. But in the last weeks, there was a chance for other players to step up – like Firpo and Gruev.

“I won’t lie. A few additions in defensive positions would be helpful. But it has to make sense for us. If not, we go with what we’ve got and I trust my group. We are in a good position.

“We didn’t win it in the lottery. We won it with good development.”

Get reinforcements in

It is clear that no matter what Farke says to the press, he believes that Leeds United need defensive reinforcements this month ahead of the second half of the season.

While the likes of Archie Gray and Ethan Ampadu have impressed in the backline in recent weeks, they are not defenders and as the Whites push for the automatic promotion places in the next few months, they will need players who are natural in that position.

When everybody is fit, Leeds are well-stocked at the back, but it is very rare in the championship that a team has no injuries. The Whites are likely to have at least one player out between now and the end of the season.

Hopefully, Farke gets the signings that he quite obviously desires before the end of the transfer window, otherwise Leeds could well be gambling away their shot at automatic promotion.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites may have to act quickly to secure a Wilfried Gnonto replacement this month
