Daniel Farke sack latest as update over possible new Leeds boss ‘waiting in the wings’ emerges
Leeds United don’t currently have a replacement ready to take over from Daniel Farke, Adam Pope believes.
Farke is under major pressure after Leeds lost 2-1 to Aston Villa to make it three bad defeats on the bounce in the Premier League.
Leeds also lost at Brighton and Nottingham Forest prior to the international break and the run of form leaves them inside the bottom three for the first time.
Farke‘s job was scrutinised by Leeds bosses in the summer until Paraag Marathe publicly confirmed he would stay on after winning the Championship, but big questions are being asked among the fanbase now.
Leeds don’t have Farke replacement ready to go
Marcelo Bielsa has been linked to a Leeds return, while recent odds on Carlos Corberan taking over at Elland Road suggested something might be afoot.
However, in the latest episode of BBC podcast Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet journalist Adam Pope indicated 49ers Enterprises aren’t likely to have got anywhere near that far yet.
He said: “Do I feel there’s somebody in the wings waiting to come in? I’d say no right now.”
Host Jonny Buchan responded: “But they must have their people that they’re looking at should they decide to change.”
“You’ve got to think of a succession plan all the time, in business and sport, and the two combine here,” Pope said. “So there has to be that conversation, you’d be stupid not to.
“They’ve got to be in that race to stay up by Christmas, they can’t fall way behind the run rate, they just can’t. This period is crucial, it is, and if it goes bad clearly they’re going to be thinking of making a decision.”
Leeds are Farke’s last chance in the Premier League
We might never know whether Farke has what it takes to establish himself as more than a Championship specialist if he’s removed at Elland Road in the near future.
A gauntlet run of Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool next could easily spell the end for him if all three result in heavy defeats, with Leeds bosses seemingly just waiting for the chance to get rid of Farke.
If he goes then it is hard to see him getting another chance in the English top flight, with the 49ers doubts over the German in the Premier League likely to compound his two bad seasons at Norwich.
Three promotions from the second tier but two relegations (potentially three if things don’t pick up) and a pair of sackings at the top table would probably cement that reputation.
On the other hand, Liverpool appear to be there for the taking right now and Chelsea can be extremely inconsistent, so if Farke is to come back from the brink the time is nearly upon us.
