Daniel Farke has new plan to combat Dominic Calvert-Lewin problem at Leeds United

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in excellent form for Leeds United, with Daniel Farke revealing his plans for the striker.

Calvert-Lewin grabbed his fourth goal in four games against Brentford last Sunday, heading home a late equaliser to secure a crucial point for the Whites on their travels.

The former Everton man had scored one each against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the three matches before.

However, Calvert-Lewin had an injury concern following the Chelsea game, with Farke now explaining how he is going to manage his centre-forward.

Daniel Farke plans to build ‘resilience’ into Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin’s injury issues have been well-documented throughout his career, with the 28-year-old often struggling to string together an extended run of games.

The former England international only managed to surpass 30 Premier League appearances in one of his final four campaigns at Everton.

His goalscoring record took a hit as a result, and since scoring 16 during the 2020-21 season, Calvert-Lewin has failed to reach double figures in the top flight.

However, despite his injury problems in the past, Farke is not considering giving the centre-forward a rest.

When asked how he plans to handle Calvert-Lewin’s fitness, Farke told reporters at Thursday’s weekly press conference: “Hard work and smart work.

I’m not a believer in putting a player with an injury record in cotton wool. You have to build physical resilience.

“We were careful to bring him in initially and gave him a pre-season of four weeks, but also in a smart way. You don’t build any resilience if you don’t play.”

This is what Calvert-Lewin has to do to make England squad

Calvert-Lewin has not been part of the England set-up since Euro 2021, but the striker has put his name back into the conversation with his recent performances.

Harry Kane is clearly Thomas Tuchel’s number one centre-forward, but there is a lot of debate over who will be his backup at the World Cup.

There is no doubt that Calvert-Lewin is a realistic option for Tuchel, and his physical presence could give the Three Lions something different off the bench.

In order to really force the issue, though, the Leeds man may well have to register a career-best goals tally in the Premier League – the 16 he managed in 2020-21 with Everton.

If he manages to achieve that feat, Tuchel would have to strongly consider Calvert-Lewin for the World Cup.
