Daniel Farke drops new Ilia Gruev injury update ahead of Leeds United clash v Sunderland

Daniel Farke has confirmed that Leeds United are still waiting for further assessments around Ilia Gruev’s knee injury.

The Whites make the trip to the Stadium of Light on Friday (4 October) as they look to get back to winning ways in the league having only picked up a point against Norwich City last time out.

Gruev was substituted after just 20 minutes of that clash having picked up a knee injury and while Farke didn’t reveal how long he would be sidelined, he did admit he would be undertaking a scan later on Wednesday (2 October).

Speaking in a press conference as relayed by the Yorkshire Evening Post (2 October) he said: “We are still waiting for further assessment, he will have a scan later today and I can tell you more maybe this evening.

“As it stands, it looks a bit better today, doesn’t feel that bad but we have to wait for the scan.”

What happened to Leeds United star Ilia Gruev at Elland Road?

Losing Ethan Ampadu for an extended length of time was a major blow for the Whites, but now that Gruev has also been ruled out as well, Leeds’ chances of promotion have been massively impacted.

There was little that Farke or those around him at Elland Road could do to prevent both injuries and while some will suggest more precautions could have been taken, nobody expected both these knocks to occur.

Hopefully, the Whites’ business in the summer transfer window will ensure that Farke has more than enough quality at his disposal to cover both player’s absences. Both Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka are going to have to be at their best in the coming months.

Whether or not that new-look pairing has the ability to guide the Whites to promotion won’t be clear until the season comes to an end, but it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to suggest this could be a big month or two in the story of Leeds’ season.
