Daniel Farke could lose Leeds United man he wants to keep despite talks over stay
Jamie Shackleton leaving Leeds United this summer should “surprise nobody” despite being offered a new deal, according to Beren Cross.
The Leeds Live journalist indicated for the outlet’s website on 10 June that the 24-year-old’s exit was still very possible, after talks over a contract extension were confirmed on the club’s retained list (7 June).
Shackleton made 15 appearances in all competitions for Daniel Farke last term and the German is said to be “happy” to keep him as cover at full-back and in midfield.
Cody Drameh was also offered a new deal, although only to secure compensation when the 22-year-old completes his expected exit, but Shackleton’s future remains unclear.
Cross wrote: “The manager would be happy to retain Shackleton as an option in both full-back roles and midfield, but, at 24, his need for regular minutes arguably outweighs Drameh’s.
“Shackleton has never made more than seven league starts in a season for Leeds and, with his prime years on the horizon, a fresh start elsewhere should surprise nobody.”
Jamie Shackleton offered Leeds United contract
In light of how many injury problems Farke had to contend with at full-back last term it is little surprise that he is interested in keeping hold of a player who can fill in on either side.
With Connor Roberts’ loan from Burnley having come to an end the picture is again looking thin, on the right in particularly, especially when teenage sensation and regular starter last season Archie Gray is a potential big-money departure this summer.
On the left Junior Firpo has been tipped by The Athletic’s Phil Hay [Square Ball, 8 June] to potentially be sold back to Spain as well, so it would clearly provide some peace of mind if the manager at least knows he has Shackleton in his ranks.

But it is true that at his age it would potentially be another step backwards at an age when he needs to be playing regularly.
Shackleton had made 36 Championship appearances two seasons ago on loan at Millwall, albeit often off the bench, so the relative lack of action last term will have been an frustration.
He will have to assess whether the weakening of a squad which had just been relegated from the Premier League and had designs on an immediate return will open the door for him sufficiently, and if not he will hit the free agent market.
