Daniel Farke confirms if Ian Poveda will be able to play v Leeds United for Sheffield Wednesday
Daniel Farke has confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday will be without Leeds United loanee Ian Poveda ahead of their Championship clash on Friday 8 March.
The 24-year-old winger joined the Owls during the January transfer window, going on the search for more game time, and has since played seven matches under Danny Rohl.
Despite six of these appearances being from the start, Wednesday will have to compete against the Whites without Poveda, who is on loan from Elland Road.
Phil Hay took to X to share the news on Wednesday (6 March), writing: “Poveda, on loan at Sheff Wed, not eligible to play against Leeds, Farke confirms.”
Will Sheffield Wednesday miss Ian Poveda v Leeds United?
Everyone at Elland Road is aware of Poveda’s talents, and having earned his international debut with Colombia in December, many hoped that he would return and fight for his spot in the starting XI.
That is much harder said than done, however. Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto are already fighting over the right-wing spot, with both players in fine form during the 2023/24 campaign.
And with Crysencio Summerville on the opposite flank, there was nearly zero chance of Poveda getting into Farke’s starting XI. Albeit a cruel rule for loanees in England, he will have to sit out the huge clash against his parent club.
Though it makes sense, Poveda will likely be desperate to save his new club from relegation, with Wednesday planted firmly in the relegation zone and at risk of playing League One football next term.
A win at Hillsborough for the Owls could prove vital for their survival, with teams from 17th to 23rd separated by just two points, and only six points between themselves and the top half of the Championship table.
Leeds will be keen to punish their opponents, however, with the title race just as tight at the top of the table. The Whites are only behind league leaders Leicester City by five points, but Ipswich Town could also have a massive say in who is promoted this season.
In other Leeds United news, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp shared an “insane” verdict after watching a recent Whites match.
