Dan James shares verdict on exit of Leeds United ace Archie Gray

Leeds United star Dan James has shared that it was “gutting” when Archie Gray exited Elland Road for Tottenham Hotspur.

Gray played a regular role within the Leeds squad last term and was among the club’s best players despite being played in an unnatural role.

James, speaking on the departure of Gray, admitted that it was an awful feeling seeing the youngster exit but claimed that there was a silver lining.

“A lot of people, fans especially, would have been gutted if we didn’t keep Joe,” James told LUTV.

“It’s gutting to see Archie go, we wish him all the best, but to get Joe in [is great].

“He was a massive part of our team last year. We had a great defensive record and he was a massive part of doing that. So to get him in is such a positive signing for us.”

Archie Gray Leeds United was unexpected but necessary

The £40million sale of Gray to Tottenham this summer was certainly one that few expected to actually happen at Leeds.

The midfielder is only 18 years old and has just one season of senior football under his belt.

Granted, he did play an important role in the team’s campaign and deserves the move to the top flight but most expected the youngster to stay for at least another term.

It was even said that Gray was happy to remain at Leeds [TEAMtalk, 25 June] for another season and continue his development in West Yorkshire rather than looking for an exit.

However, as the Whites needed a big sale, Gray was the unfortunate sacrifice that Daniel Farke had to make.

Leeds have brought Joe Rothwell in as another option in midfield but are yet to bring in a right back.

Jayden Bogle has found himself as Leeds’ top target with the club already making a £3m bid [Alan Nixon], but that will need to be increased for any success.

These are all things to keep a close eye on.

In other Leeds news, the Whites could look at bringing in Oliver Skipp after Glen Kamara’s exit.
