Daily Mail reveal ’embarrassing’ Leeds United info ahead of play-off final v Southampton

If Leeds United lose to Southampton in the Play-Off final they will make unwanted history with the joint most losses in the competition.

The Whites are set to travel to the capital to face the Saints at Wembley knowing they must win to secure a place in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s side had struggled for form until their 4-0 Elland Road win over Norwich City in the semi-final second leg. He will hope this form carries through into the final.

Writing for the Daily Mail (25 May), Joe Bernstein has said that Leeds will match a competition record for defeats should they lose to the Saints on Sunday (26 May).

He said: “Should Leeds miss out again, they will join MK Dons as the only club to have participated in six campaigns and been successful in none of them.

“The list of clubs to have beaten Leeds in the past is hardly the most intimidating in English football — Charlton Athletic, Watford, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall and Derby County.

“Indeed, it is a bit embarrassing for a proud club who won league championships under Don Revie and Howard Wilkinson. Neither do they seem choosy where they self-destruct.”

Leeds United set for Play-Off final clash v Southampton

The Whites were struggling for form until Norwich turned up and they were turned over in a great win at Elland Road.

Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville got on the scoresheet to send Leeds to Wembley for the final.

It has been a superb season overall for Farke who amassed a 90-point total and was hugely unfortunate not to be promoted automatically.

This was scuppered by a poor run of form which saw just two Championship wins in April and May before the Play-Offs kicked off.

The 4-0 win certainly changed the tide and gave Leeds fans some confidence ahead of the final where a season’s work is on the line.

The Saints beat Farke’s side on the final day of the season to complete the double after a 3-1 victory at St Mary’s earlier in the season.

Leeds are coming into the clash confident but the form book has the clash potentially in Southampton’s favour.

Farke must try and keep the club from this unwanted Play-Off record.
