Crawley Town mock Leeds United on Twitter after West Ham FA Cup announcement

Crawley Town made light of their FA Cup victory over Leeds United last season after West Ham drew the Whites in this season’s third round on Monday (6 December).

The League Two club beat Marcelo Bielsa’s side 3-0 at the same stage last season just under 11 months ago (10 January).

After West Ham confirmed their meeting with Leeds in January, Crawley replied on their official Twitter account: “Shouldn’t be too much of a problem, West Ham.”

Embarrassment

The 2020/21 campaign was another successful one for Bielsa and his charges, securing a ninth-place Premier League finish upon their return to the top-flight.

However, January was arguably their worst month of the year and the Crawley defeat was the most embarrassing one.

Bielsa rang the changes for the tie at The People’s Pension Stadium but there was still plenty of experience on show in the shape of Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper, Pablo Hernandez and Ezgjan Alioski.

Unfortunately, Kiko Casilla had a nightmare in goal and the Whites were second best all over the pitch.

Leeds United

Even the introductions of Raphinha and Jack Harrison could not prevent the Whites from falling to a heavy defeat against a side three divisions below them.

To add to their woes, celebrity Mark Wright came on for the hosts as his documentary received a boost.

At least Leeds will not face the embarrassment of being knocked out by a lower league side at the third round this season – West Ham are flying high in the Premier League and challenging for Champions League qualification.

It will be interesting to see how Bielsa approaches this game – he doesn’t have the deepest squad around, and he may look to prioritise the Premier League if there is still any danger of the Whites being dragged into a relegation dogfight.
