Coventry City boss Mark Robins provides transfer update on Leeds United linked Gus Hamer

Coventry City manager Mark Robins admits the future of Gustavo Hamer lies in the player’s hands as several clubs line up to sign him this summer including Leeds United.

Football League World reported on 10 June that Leeds United were plotting a “very ambitious” swoop to sign Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer, with former Eurosport journalist Dean Jones speaking on the Fulhamish podcast (10 July, 22m 10s) that the Whites are actively looking at the Brazilian to bolster their squad.

Hamer proved one of Coventry’s star players last season alongside the departed Viktor Gyokeres, contributing to an impressive 11 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.

And Robins, speaking to the Coventry Telegraph (26 July) following their pre-season encounter on Tuesday (25 July) hopes that Hamer will commit his future at the club but the decision lies with the Brazilian.

He said: “Nothing at all and I honestly don’t expect anything to happen. And I will be glad if it doesn’t.”

“I will keep talking to him and working towards a solution for everybody; the best for everybody and hopefully that will be him staying.”

Asked if there is a possibility of a new contract, he added: “I have got nothing new to add on that or share with anybody. I think that will become clearer as we move forward, but that’s entirely down to Gus.”

Leeds must push

It’s incredibly clear why Coventry City are desperate to keep Hamer at the club and why several other clubs are currently in the race to sign him, but Leeds United are arguably the most in desperate need of his talented services.

Over 41 league appearances, the 26-year-old talent – hailed “unbelievable” by former Coventry City goalkeeper Marko Marosi – showcased his stunning playmaking and creative qualities, something several Leeds stars failed to provide last season.

With Leeds set to lose most of their creative outlets, Farke will be desperate for some wizardry and imagination to sharpen his new tactical formula at Elland Road and Hamer provides that in abundance, averaging 1.6 key passes last season whilst recording 16 big chances created [SofaScore].

Hamer isn’t just an influential commodity in the attacking third, but a workhorse and a terrier-like influence in the defensive phases of play too, averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.1 successful dribbles and winning 4.8 duels per game, proving his huge presence and perfect all-rounder invention from a deeper midfield role.

Whoever lines up with the Brazilian at the centre-piece of their project come the new Championship, that club will certainly be amongst the promotion contenders at the end of the campaign, and Leeds United and Daniel Farke must ensure they are the ones possessing Hamer’s unerring qualities.
