Courtney Sweetman-Kirk thrilled by Leeds United goalkeeper Ilan Meslier v Newcastle United
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk has showered praise on Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier after he produced a fantastic save during the Premier League draw against Newcastle United on Saturday (31 December).
The Whites produced a resolute display away at St James’ Park and managed a 0-0 draw, with Meslier making some brilliant saves throughout the game.
In the 61st minute of the game, Fabian Schar had a header superbly saved by the French goalkeeper from close range, and it sparked effusive praise from Sweetman-Kirk.
Sweetman-Kirk, who is also seen doing punditry and co-commenting on Sky Sports, described the save as “fabulous” during the game.
“Another fabulous save from Meslier. It’s a real good save. Look at the roar from Meslier,” said Sweetman-Kirk on the Premier League World feed (31 December, 61 min).
It was a gutsy performance from the Whites and for the first time this season, they showed real composure at the back.
At times, the Magpies really came close to scoring, as it is expected of them to dominate at home, but the Whites’ defence stayed resolute.
Leeds didn’t create enough clear-cut opportunities but they picked up a valuable point away at St James’ Park, and the performance will give them a lot of confidence.
The fans have been pointing it out for a while that the defence is letting the team down, but on this occasion, it was a different story on a rain-soaked night at Tyneside.
Meslier was outstanding in the previous game against Manchester City as well, and he once again played a crucial role.
The 22-year-old could be targeted by several top clubs who need a goalkeeper next summer [TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey; 8 November], but Leeds are under no pressure to sell him.
He is the future of the club, and the Whites must do everything to keep him at Elland Road for a long time.
In other Leeds United news, the club is thrashing out terms for an early January signing after this player jetted into the UK for a move.
