Contract news emerges in Leeds United pursuit of Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner

Philadelphia Union have activated the option of extending left-back Kai Wagner’s deal until 2023, amid interest from Leeds United, as reported by Kevin Nieto.

The L’Equipe journalist has shared on Twitter that French club Nice are also interested in signing the German defender who is arguably the best defender in the MLS.

Nieto suggests that there’s a strong interest from the Whites, and the club have taken the decision probably to get a good price for the player.

Nieto wrote on Twitter: “Philadelphia activated Kai Wagner’s option. The best left-back in MLS is therefore under contract until the end of 2023. Probably just a way to get a good price. German passport, strong interest from Leeds. Not surprised if clubs wake up. A profile for Nice.”

Left-back

The Whites are looking to bolster their defence in January (or in the summer) and they are after a left-back.

Wagner has been outstanding for the MLS club in the past few years, and he would be a cracking addition to the side. It remains to be seen if the Whites make a move for him in January, as they may now have to pay a bit more than what they had expected.

When Junior Firpo was signed by the club, it was thought that he would solve the left-back issues, but he has failed to convince the fans.

Not only he remains injured most of the time, but his performances haven’t been up to the mark even when he is fit to play. With Stuart Dallas also out with a long-term injury, Leeds do need a specialist left back.

TeamTalk reported on 6 November that the Whites are showing keen interest to sign Borrusia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro, which suggests that the club are exploring several options.
