Cody Gakpo makes Leeds United transfer reveal from Qatar ahead of Netherlands v Argentina
Cody Gakpo has lifted the lid on his summer transfer saga and his collapsed move to Leeds United ahead of Netherlands v Argentina on Friday.
Gakpo was at the top of Jesse Marsch’s shopping list over the summer as the Leeds United boss tried to bolster the club’s attacking department.
However, the PSV striker saw his Elland Road move collapse on deadline day, and he’s now revealed that he had “doubts” about moving to Yorkshire.
“I thought about Man Utd last summer, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore. Then Leeds arrived, I had doubts… now I wait and see.”
Out of reach
The entire Gakpo saga has been extremely frustrating for Leeds.
The 23-year-old came within inches of completing a move to the Whites in the summer but chose to stay at PSV as he looked forward to the World Cup.
Now that the Qatar tournament has arrived, Gakpo has been one of the standout performers which will inevitably see his market value skyrocket.
Leeds were already having to fend off European powerhouses to try and sign him in the summer – now, it sadly seems he’ll be out of reach in January.
It shouldn’t stop the club from trying to seal his signature in January, but the bidding war is bound to get out of control quickly.
Marsch will be hurting watching Gakpo score so freely in Qatar knowing he could have had him playing in white this season, but the American will just have to search elsewhere for a much-needed striker in January.
