Classic Leeds clash set for primetime showing on Monday night

BT Sport are set to feature the 2000/01 Champions League round of 16 clash between Leeds United and Lazio on their Retro Goals Show tonight. 

The broadcaster will be showing highlights of our six-goal thriller in an hour-long special on Monday evening, starting at 9.30pm on BT Sport 1.

David O’Leary’s men reaffirmed their place in the quarter-finals of European’s elite tournament almost two decades ago with a stunning 3-3 draw against their Serie A opponents – a vital step in their stunning run to the last four.

The Whites came from behind twice in a pulsating match, only for a late penalty from Siniša Mihajlović to deny them a superb victory.

Goals from Mark Viduka, James Wilcox, and Lee Bowyer were enough for Leeds to post an impressive result, and send out a message to rest of the competition by finishing second in their group behind Real Madrid.

What better way to spend a Monday night in lockdown than reliving some of Leeds’ most glorious times?

The Whites were a completely different beast back then, mixing it with some of the very best sides Europe had to offer, but here’s hoping that we don’t have to wait too long to see this kind of success again.

Of course, we’re much more accustomed to the Championship than the Champions League these days, but it really does feel as if we’re going somewhere under Marcelo Bielsa.

The likes of Wolves and Sheffield United have proven in recent seasons that it is possible to make a return to the Premier League in style, and with the Argentinian genius at the helm, who would bet against us going up and causing a few ripples in the upper reaches of the table?

It’s not the kind of thing that would happen overnight, but with Bielsa in the dugout, who’s to say that the Champions League won’t return to Elland Road sooner rather than later?
