Chris Sutton has tipped Leeds United winger Daniel James to be the “biggest diver at the World Cup” in Qatar this winter.

James, 24, is currently on loa with Fulham and has had little impact so far with the London club in his three appearances.

The former Swansea and Manchester United attacker has a reputation of going down early and Sutton feels he could be one to watch at he World Cup – for all the wrong reasons.

“It doesn’t matter, lower league football, Premier League football or international football, we will just track them down,” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, as transcribed by HITC.

“I was at Wembley [for England v Germany] and [Thilo] Kehrer, take greater carer, that’s what I would say to him. Stay on your feet. Don’t throw yourself down and don’t simulate, because I tell you what we will do, we will call you out and tell you ‘you’re better than that Thilo Kehrer’. Getting his dives in before the World Cup. Getting all the practice in, that’s what the Germans do, they dive, don’t they?

“It’s going to be interesting the World Cup, who is going to be the biggest diver at the World Cup? Have the Welsh got any divers? Daniel James? Daniel James, likes to dive, doesn’t he?!”

Grow up

We all hate diving.

It’s one of the worst things about football but the introduction of VAR and harsher refereeing does seem to have helped the more obvious attempts at simulation.

However, what hasn’t improved are decisions that see very, very soft fouls get punished.

James is a player who’s very quick and agile and he draws a lot of fouls as a result.

But that doesn’t make him a diver. We really don’t think that tag is fair.

Has he gone down softly to win a foul in his career? Of course he has. Who hasn’t these days?

However, that’s not an issue with the players. That’s an issues with the referees and how they manage games because they consistently keep giving fouls for the smallest amount of contact.

Why should players skip out on winning a free-kick or a penalty if they feel contact, just because staying on your feet is the right thing to do?

Sutton should know this and naming James is unfair.
