Chris Sutton slams Leeds United, delivers scathing Victor Orta verdict

Chris Sutton believes Leeds United are currently a “mess” and the recent transfer activity of Victor Orta should be coming under scrutiny.

The Whites have splashed plenty of cash in the last year, signing the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams in the summer and club-record signing Georgina Rutter in the winter window.

Despite spending these large sums of money, Leeds are once again embroiled in a Premier League relegation scrap, sitting just one point above the bottom three with six games of their season remaining.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (25 April), Sutton doubled down on the strange recruitment of the West Yorkshire outfit and how Orta could be considered culpable for these failures.

“The club is in a mess,” he said.

“The signings have been odd.

“They sign the similar type of player, tricky wide players. I worry about Leeds, we all worry about them.

“Is it Victor Orta that does the signings? He has to come under scrutiny.”

Harsh truths

The glaring weaknesses of Leeds United’s squad have started coming to the fore over the last few weeks, with Tyler Adams’ injury leaving the club short-staffed in midfield and several other glaring gaps within the first-team arising.

When the January transfer window arrived and Leeds were still under the guidance of Jesse Marsch, a left-back and an out-and-out striker were the main positions on the shopping list.

However, although Max Wober has been a success story since arriving at Elland Road, the Austrian is clearly not a left-back, and the signing of Rutter has been an abject failure thus far, considering the club-record fee attached.

At the end of the day, Orta must take responsibility for the failings of several signings.

Yes, Willy Gnonto was snapped up at a bargain last summer, and yes, Wober looks like a Premier League standard player, but the weaknesses in the Leeds United squad simply haven’t been addressed over the last 18 months.

In other Leeds news, scouts were present to watch this 20-goal striker play last week ahead of a summer move.
