Chris Sutton predicts Leeds United scoreline v Cardiff City in FA Cup showdown

Chris Sutton is confident that Leeds United will come through their FA Cup third round tie away at Champions Cardiff City on Sunday (8 January).

The Whites have not made it past the third round of the competition since the 2016-17 season and have been embarrassed by Crawley Town and Sutton United in recent seasons.

Despite that, Sutton believes they will not only beat the Bluebirds in the Welsh capital but do so convincingly with a 3-0 scoreline predicted.

“It is 21 years since Cardiff shocked Leeds with a famous FA Cup third-round win but I don’t see the Welsh side causing them any problems whatsoever this time,” he said to the BBC.

“Part of the reason for that is that Cardiff are playing so poorly at the moment, but I also think Jesse Marsch will pick a strong side and that Leeds will play with their usual intensity.”

No complacency

Past seasons have seen Leeds United play a heavily rotated side in the cup competitions and they have been dumped out very early year after year.

As much as Premier League survival still has to take priority at this stage in the season, Jesse Marsch has to realise that the fans would love a deep run in the FA Cup and a potential trip to Wembley as a result.

It would be a pleasant surprise to see the American name a very strong team to face Cardiff who will be looking forward to a break from league football themselves.

The Championship table may suggest they are not in form but as the old cliche goes, anything can happen in the FA Cup and the form book really does go out of the window.

The release of pressure can sometimes find the best out of some players and Marsch has to try and instil confidence into his main team and keep them in for the oldest cup competition in the world.

In other Leeds United news, Victor Orta could well finally fix this one problem position at Elland Road with talk that he could try and sign a teenage sensation from Europe.
