Chris Sutton delivers scathing review of Leeds United strategy in ‘absolute chaos’ theory

Chris Sutton believes Leeds United are in “absolute chaos” and has accused the club of making up their decisions as they go along regarding Javi Gracia.

The Whites crumbled to a 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth last weekend (30 April) and remained a single point above the Premier League relegation zone, with a record-breaking 23 goals conceded in April alone.

The Times have also reported (2 May) that Leeds United are preparing to sack Gracia just over three months after parting company with American manager Jesse Marsch.

Speaking on The Monday Night Club (1 May, 28:00), Sutton slammed the strategy of the club this season and believes there are “deeper issues” than Leeds’ poor recruitment.

“But is one of the underlying issues the fact that at this moment in time, do Leeds seem to be a club in absolute chaos?

“Micah [Richards] touched on the signings and what have you, but I think there are deeper issues. Who has brought all of these players in?

“The biggest issue at Leeds this season is where has the plan been?

“So, with regards to Marsch, there was the uncertainty over who was going to take over. They should have planned for that, they should have planned for if it all went wrong under Marsch.

“And with Gracia, they’re making it up as they go along and that’s the biggest issue. I take Rory’s point about [relegation] not being a disaster, but the way the club is being run at this moment in time, would you trust the current people in place to get them back up?

“That is the bigger worry.”

Trouble everywhere

Leeds United are in a whole heap of trouble right now, with an abundance of problems evident both on and off the pitch.

Yes, Gracia’s side have been in truly terrible form of late, and yes, the Spaniard is ultimately culpable for setting up the team in the correct fashion, but it really doesn’t help when you have poor leadership behind you in the club’s hierarchy.

The dreadful strategic decisions of Victor Orta, Andrea Radrizzani and Angus Kinnear has been well-documented this season, with no replacements ready for Marsch when he was sacked in February, and the business undertaken in the January transfer window looking worse and worse by the week.

It seems like the Whites are set to part company with Gracia after some horrific performances in recent weeks, but those at the top of the club should be following in the 53-year-old’s footsteps if they really do care about the future of Leeds United.
