Charlie Austin raves about Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips in England win

QPR striker Charlie Austin was blown away by Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips in England’s 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday.

Gareth Southgate’s men booked themselves a spot in the quarter-finals, where they will take on Ukraine in Rome on Saturday, after a stunning victory over the Germans.

Phillips, 25, played all 90 minutes of the win and speaking to talkSPORT after the game on Tuesday, Austin couldn’t speak highly enough of the Leeds star.

As shown on talkSPORT’s Twitter account, Austin said: “[Declan] Rice and Phillips controlled the game for us.

“If you look at it, the only game we questioned was the Scotland game when Declan came out and said, ‘we might have been below par’.

“But today, they were superb.

“One bit I saw in the second half, when we were sitting off Germany, Phillips came busting through [Harry] Kane and [Raheem] Sterling to press the centre-halves.

“I just thought he was the one trying to make something happen. Even though the Germans had the ball, he was the one trying to inject some pace into the side to get us up the pitch a little bit.”

England’s player of the tournament?

Phillips has been outstanding for England at the European Championships.

He was easily the man of the match against Croatia in the first match, he was quiet against Scotland and solid against the Czech Republic.

And then against Germany on Tuesday night in England’s biggest match at the European Championships in recent memory, the Leeds midfielder was at his absolute best.

You can just picture Marcelo Bielsa sitting at his home in Wetherby watching the match with a little smile on his face – although knowing Bielsa he was probably in full analytical mode, assessing every single player on the pitch and then doing the same for Ukraine’s win over Sweden afterwards.

Phillips was superb though and deserves all the praise he’s getting.

Not only did he break up the Germany attacks so well by executing brilliant tackles and clever fouls, but he also managed his game superbly after being booked.

He also looked a threat going forward, spraying superb passes across the park and even bursting forward to pressure the defenders, as noticed by Austin.

What a player he is. It makes us so proud to know he’s one of us.
