Charlie Austin makes claim about Leeds player as he answers talkSPORT question

Charlie Austin does not believe that Kalvin Phillips is the best player in the EFL but has claimed that the Leeds United midfielder will have a “very good career”.

Ask any Leeds fan – and most neutral fans – to name who they believe is the best player in the EFL and you’ll get a few different names come up.

However you can guarantee that Phillips, 24, is mentioned more than anyone else.

It is not very often when you have a midfielder in the Championship emerge on the radar of the England manager ahead of a major international tournament while Phillips has also been linked with top Premier League clubs.

Marcelo Bielsa has helped Phillips develop from quite an average Championship midfielder into a midfield ace who wouldn’t look out of place in international football or for a club high up in the Premier League.

TalkSPORT have taken to Twitter to ask people who they think is the best player in the EFL and while West Brom forward Austin, 30, has been full of praise for Phillips, he does not believe the Leeds ace is as good as his team-mate Matheus Pereira.

“Best player in the EFL is Matheus Pereira. He has proven time and time again this season how good he is and will be, followed closely by Kalvin Phillips, who will also go on and have a very good career,” said Austin via his personal Twitter account.

Fair enough.

Pereira, 23, is a fantastic player and West Brom did very well to sign him in the summer and include an option-to-buy clause in his loan deal.

Austin plays alongside the Brazilian attacker so he is bound to choose him over any other in the EFL.

We still maintain it’s Phillips who takes the gong but outside of Elland Road, Pereira is probably the best with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ollie Watkins not far behind.

In other Leeds United news, Paul Robinson has a concern about Kiko Casilla.
