CBS journalist loses it after Illan Meslier incident during Leeds United defeat v Tottenham Hotspur
CBS journalist Jake Winderman has blasted VAR for not intervening and ruling out Tottenham’s opening goal in the 4-3 win over Leeds United.
The Whites took the lead through Crysencio Summerville before Harry Kane equalised after Illan Meslier flapped at a corner, having been barged into by Spurs defender Clement Lenglet.
But despite reviewing the decision after Kane slammed the ball into the net on VAR the goal was given to the bemusement of many including Winderman, who took to social media to vent his frustrations.
“What is even the point of VAR if they’re going to give a goal like that?” he said on his personal Twitter account (12 November).
“Meslier got absolutely clattered and gets no protection. Don’t get me started if that was Lloris…”
Goalkeeper’s generally get a lot of protection from referees whenever there is some sort of physical contact from an opposing player, even when it probably doesn’t warrant it.
But according to this referee, jumping into the goalkeeper and pushing him into the net without making any such contact on the ball is perfectly fine because it’s against Leeds.
You may remember Patrick Bamford having a goal disallowed against Arsenal last month for a “push” on Gabriel, but there a fraction of the contact on that occasion in comparison to this challenge.
Had it been the other way around and Lloris had been the one on the receiving end of it, you can bet your bottom dollar that VAR would have got involved and ruled the goal out.
It’s a laughable decision and while the team responded well and ultimately should have done more to get a result, you can’t rule out the impact that decision had on the game overall.
