Michael Carrick was spotted taking "pelters" from the Elland Road crowd before Leeds United beat Middlesbrough 3-1 on Tuesday.

Due to his Manchester United connections, the 43-year-old was not the most favourable figure at Elland Road as Daniel Farke's side claimed all three points on 10 December.

A Max Wober own goal looked like the points could be shared following Wilfried Gnonto's opener, only for Dan James and midfielder Brenden Aaronson to fire home to steal a victory in the final 15 minutes.

Writing via the Yorkshire Evening Post [11 December], Joe Donnohue said: "Boro boss Michael Carrick receiving pelters from the select number of home fans already inside the ground 90 minutes before kick-off.

"Boro staff members picked up on the particular jibe directed the ex-Manchester United player's way and saw the funny side."

Leeds United claim important victory over Middlesbrough

While Sheffield United have now moved back to the top of the Championship table, Leeds took an important step towards the target of promotion with the win at Elland Road.

There is now a three-point gap between themselves and Burnley in 3rd and a promotion race is truly heating up. The Whites cannot afford to miss out again.

Farke almost led his side to glory last term, only missing out narrowly in the Championship play-offs against Southampton at Wembley Stadium. Absolute heartbreak.

Despite a number of outgoings during the summer, Leeds are back in the driving seat once again and will be aiming to be one of the teams who gain automatic promotion this time around.

With Boro also aiming for promotion, a win against a fellow rival was exactly the result they needed following the recent 1-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers, adding to the 2-0 win over Derby County.
