Carlton Palmer thrilled by 'great' Archie Gray update coming out of Leeds United
Carlton Palmer has been left delighted by the news that Archie Gray is keen to remain at Leeds United despite Premier League interest in the teenager.
The 17-year-old has been integral to Daniel Farke’s side’s impressive start to the season, featuring in 15 of the 16 Championship games in the opening months of the campaign, but had been linked with an expensive move to the Premier League.
Liverpool and several other Premier League sides were reportedly interested in Gray with Leeds hoping for a fee of up to £40million [Daily Mail, 10 November] but Palmer is thrilled that the Whites academy product looks set to remain at Elland Road for now.
As quoted by Football League World (21 November) he said: “Leeds United are confident that Archie Gray will commit his future to the club, despite interest from top clubs at home and abroad.
“Leeds have slapped a whooping £30-40m price tag on the young man’s head. But in a massive boost for the club in their quest to reclaim their Premier League status once again, Gray has given the club the indication that he’s happy where he is, and wants to continue his footballing education at Leeds United under Daniel Farke.
“This is great news for the manager, the club and the supporters.”
Great news
If Leeds United want to continue their impressive start to the season and make up the early gap between them and the two clubs currently occupying the automatic promotion places in Leicester City and Ipswich, they are going to need their best players to remain at Elland Road.
While Gray is still young, he has proven to be a crucial member of Farke’s squad in the opening months of the season, whether that be at the heart of midfield or at right-back where he has featured more regularly in recent weeks.
A £40million bid would have been hard for any Championship side to turn down and interest from a club as big as Liverpool would have turned most teenagers’ heads, but it is becoming clearer with each passing week that Gray is by no means your average teenager.
Farke has built an incredibly competitive and hungry squad at Elland Road and the players love to play for the German. Hopefully, that drive within the group will power the Whites back to the Premier League this season.
