Rio Ferdinand predicts result of Cardiff City vs Leeds United match in Championship

Rio Ferdinand has provided his prediction ahead of next Saturday’s (13 January) Championship clash between Cardiff City and Leeds United.

Leeds make the trip to South Wales on the back of successive 3-0 victories in all competitions to begin the new calendar year.

Former Leeds defender Ferdinand can see the Whites maintaining their winning streak in the Welsh capital by a slim margin.

Speaking on the Vibe with Five podcast [8 January, 1hr 6m 36s], Ferdinand said: “Big game that, big rivalry. Leeds to win 2-1.”

Back on track

Leeds appear to have turned a corner again thanks to their back-to-back wins, but the calibre of opponents has to be factored in.

Birmingham City were terrible in what proved to be Wayne Rooney’s final game, while Peterborough United are a League One team.

Still, it is nice to have put the defeats against West Brom and Preston North End to one side, with that a horrible end to 2023.

This trip to Cardiff is now a big test, with this a fixture United have memorably struggled in down the years.

Indeed, since September 1984, Leeds have won just four out of the sides’ 29 meetings home and away, including a 2-2 draw on the opening weekend of this season.

Leeds are a different prospect now compared to August, however, and they will be targeting all three points at Cardiff City Stadium.

If they can pick up from where they left off in the opening week of 2024, there is no reason why that cannot be achieved.

In other Leeds United news, a BBC journalist says a development at Elland Road in the past 48 hours is “staggering”.
