Brenden Aaronson labelled a ‘loser’ after what Leeds United star did for United States
Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson has been ripped apart following the United States’ 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the early hours of Wednesday (16 October).
The Americans were unable to build on Mauricio Pochettino’s first victory in charge – a 2-0 win over Panama – conceding to Fulham’s Raul Jimenez and Cesar Huerta in the friendly fixture.
Despite an overall poor performance from the team, Aaronson’s display was specifically highlighted as the Leeds man failed to impress at the AKRON Stadium.
Handing Aaronson a 6/10 rating, NBC Sports [16 October] wrote: “Lost the ball a handful of times and struggled to turn his energy into anything but jagged edges over the first hour (maybe more).
“But kept grinding and was stuck into an astounding 20 duels, winning 10. He was credited with three created chances and his last 20 minutes or so was a welcome display and showed excellent resolve.”
Goal [16 October] rubbed salt in the wounds, labelling him as a “loser” during the game, writing: “Time and time again, Aaronson went down due to some rough play and, time and time again, the referee told him to play on.
“The USMNT midfielder seemed more frustrated each time as he couldn’t get a foul call no matter how hard he was hit. As a result, he had a rough night, to put it lightly.”
Brenden Aaronson fails to impress away from Leeds United
Aaronson is certainly still learning his trade, having earned Daniel Farke’s trust back and becoming a key figure at Elland Road this season.
The 23-year-old has bagged two goals and one assist in his first nine Championship appearances as the Whites aim to secure promotion to the Premier League, and Farke needs his players firing on all cylinders.
Aaronson’s performance against Mexico will do little to help his confidence, especially having been singled out by the media, but he must put that behind him quickly before returning to Elland Road.

Given Leeds’ midfield issues, with both Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev injured, he is highly likely to start as Farke’s side take on Sheffield United on Friday (18 October).
The Whites are just three points behind Sunderland and the Blades at the top of the Championship table, having only lost one game so far, and the game at the Elland Road already looks to be a six-pointer.
