Brendan Rodgers ‘firmly’ indicates Leeds United wishes amid Elland Road talk – Phil Hay

Brendan Rodgers appears to be out of the running to be the new head coach of Leeds United, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

According to The Daily Record on 13 June, Leeds were looking to throw everything at the former Leicester boss and hijack his impending move to Celtic.

However, Hay has revealed (The Athletic, 14 June) that Rodgers has “firmly indicated” that he does not intend to drop into the Championship.

The 50-year-old was the preferred candidate for the board, however, the 49ers are now focussing on other targets.

No surprise

It should come as no surprise to see Rodgers want to avoid dropping into the Championship.

He’s a top manager and could well want to remain in the Premier League. Therefore, the links to Celtic make very little sense.

If he’s reluctant to move to a Championship club, then why on earth is he happy to drop into the Scottish Premiership? Outside the Old Firm, the majority of Scotland’s top tier would struggle to survive in the Championship. Many would also struggle in League One.

His logic doesn’t stand up.

He will undoubtedly go to Celtic and enjoy success, but who doesn’t? The duopoly in Scottish football has been to the detriment of the domestic game.

If he move to Leeds, it would show ambition to fight and get back into the Premier League. Then, who knows where he could take the club.

It’s back to the drawing board for the decision-makers at Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, one star is to miss the start of pre-season after an official announcement.
