‘Blatant’ – Sky Sports pundit rages at Dominic Calvert-Lewin incident in Leeds United draw

Leeds United being denied a penalty for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Brentford has infuriated Jermaine Beckford.

Daniel Farke’s revival at Elland Road continued on Sunday as Leeds drew 1-1 at the GTech Community Stadium to make it three games unbeaten since the German was on the brink of the sack.

Calvert-Lewin sparked this run of form after coming off the bench at Man City a fortnight ago, and scored the equaliser against the Bees for his forth consecutive outing on the scoresheet.

But the Whites could also have had a penalty in West London after Calvert-Lewin was pulled to the ground in the box by Nathan Collins only for referee John Brooks to say no and VAR not to challenge that decision.

Jermaine Beckford slams Leeds vs Brentford officials

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Leeds striker Beckford was outraged that the Whites weren’t given a spot kick soon after the second half kicked off when Calvert-Lewin looked to be dragged down by his shoulders.

Brentford had earlier been given a seemingly more marginal penalty in the first half when Dango Ouattara went down under light contact from Gabriel Gudmundsson, which was eventually overturned for an offside call.

Calvert-Lewin’s lack of appeal seemed to work against him, which particularly annoyed Beckford.

He wrote on X: “Soo many officials could’ve looked at this blatant penalty & help the referee who clearly missed it.

“DCL was blatantly dragged down. Unless he screams at the ref & makes a show of being fouled nothing happens.

“The point of var was to help in situations like this! Disappointing”.

Calvert-Lewin leads Daniel Farke out of the woods

When Leeds signed Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer following his release from Everton it was hardly the blockbuster addition that fans would have got especially excited about.

The more cynical supporters might have felt the Whites were essentially just replacing Patrick Bamford with another injury-ravaged former England international whose best days in front of goal appeared to be behind them.

An indifferent start to life in the side, including a nightmare outing as Leeds were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by a Sheffield Wednesday side in turmoil, where he missed a golden chance to win the game and then fired over in the penalty shoot out, seemed to prove any doubts correct.

But just when Farke looked like he was on a one-way ticket out of the club heading into December it is Calvert-Lewin that appears to have saved the German’s job.

On current form it seems impossible for the 49ers to sack the manager, and a stirring fightback at the Etihad behind Calvert-Lewin scoring and winning a penalty was the start of five points from the following three fixtures with the Englishman finding the net in each.

History suggests the goals may dry up again before too long but he’s scored them when it mattered for his manager to prove a lot of people wrong, and had he won another penalty at Brentford it could have been even better.
