Bielsa promised Leeds players time off if they won v Watford
Leeds United finally picked up their first Premier League win of 2021-22 on Saturday, handing Watford a 1-0 defeat at Elland Road.
Diego Llorente’s early goal made all the difference, and the victory ensured that Marcelo Bielsa’s side headed into the international break out of the relegation zone.
The Argentine had watched his side fail to get a win in six, and according to Phil Hay, he came up with an incentive heading into the clash.
The Athletic journalist wrote on their website: “Victory over Watford came with the promise of a generous amount of time off for his non-internationals this week.”
Nobody wants to be playing murderball for two weeks, and it appeared Leeds players found a much-needed extra motivation for the clash.
It was one of their best performances so far this term, with everyone giving their all.
Those not on international duty will still undergo some training sessions at Thorp Arch this week, but the generous amount of time off given them is a deserved luxury.
Bielsa came up with the perfect plan to spur his players on, and it worked.
Leeds resume Premier League action with a trip to winless Southampton before games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur, and given the forms of these five clubs, picking up a lot of points at their expense is very possible.
For now, the Whites players will enjoy their time off and look to return refreshed in order to prepare well for the games ahead.
In other Leeds United news, Simon Jordan has suggested Whites player should be blocked from int’l duty by PL.
