‘Better than both put together’ – Some Villa fans would swap Leeds ace for two of their players
Aston Villa were linked with a move for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips over the summer but ended up signing Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba instead.
Those two players cost Villa a total of £25m and Birmingham Mail journalist Mat Kendrick posed a fascinating question today.
He asked Villa fans: “Random question. I’ve just been daydreaming about last summer. Villa were heavily linked with Kalvin Phillips from #LUFC back then. Do you wish #AVFC had signed him or are you happy with Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba?”
Phillips would likely have set Villa back the same amount of money they paid for both Luiz and Nakamba, and the majority of the fans who replied said they would have preferred Phillips.
They might not get another shot at getting him.
Leeds are on the brink of promotion and if they do secure passage back to the Premier League, which looks almost inevitable now, Phillips will surely stay at Elland Road.
He signed a new contract after the summer window shut and has been a one-club player so far.
Just recently he said he’d like to spend his whole career at Leeds and that’s a rarity in this day and age. It’s just one reason Leeds fans love him so much. The rest are on the pitch.
