Beren Cross shares if Jesse Marsch no longer rates Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt highly

Jesse Marsch’s stance on Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt has reportedly not changed despite him seeming to have fallen down in the pecking order.

The American opted to go with Willy Gnonto on the bench against Aston Villa rather than the 20-year-old who he previously rated very highly.

While many see this as Marsch having been wrong in his assessment of the player, LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross claims that is not the case.

He wrote, “No, I think Marsch was keen to stress that decision was not a negative on Gelhardt. He still rates him and that won’t have changed overnight. There’s just too many players for slots at the moment.”

Loan needed?

Gelhardt has shown signs of promise but one thing he’s lacked and that’s his consistency.

There’s a very good chance that the 20-year-old may want to prove himself on a regular basis at the senior level as he’s probably not at the level of the Under-23s anymore.

A loan move in January to a Championship club may not be the worst idea, especially if they’re at the top end of the league and fighting for promotion.

A good end to the season with him scoring around 10 goals and helping his side to seal a Premier League berth will certainly impress Marsch.

Having so many attackers to choose from is a welcome dilemma and we’re certain that the American will not be so harsh in his assessment of a player after a recent dry run.

We fully expect Gelhardt to bounce back and silence his critics sooner rather than later and will not be surprised if he leaves in January on loan.
