Beren Cross reacts as Leeds United linked with move for Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro
Leeds United are not reportedly likely to consider signing Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro this summer.
LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross has issued a clarification stating that he’s not heard anything about the Whites wanting to sign the Portugal international.
He claims that the club have made it clear that they see Junior Firpo as the first choice left-back this season.
He wrote, “I’ve not had any information on Guerreiro specifically, but nothing about that link makes sense. Firpo is their number one left-back, that’s been made abundantly clear to us, so a 28-year-old from Dortmund is not going to come in and sit on the bench or ask for back-up wages. It just doesn’t tally with any of the business they’ve done this summer.”
Need an upgrade
Cross was asked this question after former Eurosport journalist Dean Jones claimed that the Whites were keen on the 28-year-old.
Leeds are in the market for a left-back this summer, but as Cross understands the situation, they will be signing a backup to Firpo and not an upgrade.
This is not how they should operate as Firpo proved last season that he may not be ready for the Premier League and they cannot afford to gamble another season.
If they wanted a backup then they should’ve held on to Leif Davis as he would not do too bad of a job as the Spaniard’s understudy.
Having competition in every position is healthy and no left-back would not be open to that as they want to play regularly so will keep fighting for a place in the starting eleven.
Hopefully, they do look to sign Guerreiro or a player of his calibre as they can add value to the team and not just occupy another spot on the bench.
