Ben Foster blown away by new Leeds United signing Dan James

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has lavished praise on Dan James after the Wales international’s deadline day move to Leeds United.

James, 23, made the move from bitter rivals Manchester United with just hours remaining of the summer transfer window to finally sign for Leeds after his near-miss in 2019.

Former England shot-stopper Foster, speaking on The Cycling GK YouTube channel [02/09/21] which has gained over 750,000 subscribers since September 2020, is a big fan of the transfer.

“Dan James, I like that signing,” he said. “£25million from Manchester United, the guy is maybe one of the fastest players you’ll see. He’s up there with Ismael Sarr, the guys a joke, he’s absolutely rapid.

“If he can get a little more end product into his game he could be a real good signing for Leeds.

“I like it, I like the Leeds team anyway. I think if you add a few more ingredients like James I think it’s shaping up to be a good season for Leeds.”

Fearful full-backs

One thing James will do at Leeds this season is strike fear into opposition full-backs with his searing pace.

The ex-Swansea City winger can play on either flank using his trickery to get away from defenders, but there’s no denying that his speed is his best attribute.

It remains to be seen how he will be used in this Whites set-up under Marcelo Bielsa.

Raphinha is currently operating from the right-hand side with Jack Harrison on the opposite flank, and both were key figures in the side that finished ninth last season.

But it’s hard to imagine Andrea Radrizzani sanctioning a £25million move for James if Bielsa wasn’t planning on making him a starter.

As such, while he may be used from the bench initially in order to adapt and get up to speed, James will surely be bidding to break into the starting XI within a few weeks.

That may initiate a tactical tweak as Bielsa looks to cram his three creative talents behind Patrick Bamford in the Whites attack.
