BBC pundit tears Leeds to shreds for 'disappointing' decision: 'Really bad of the football club'

BBC Radio Leeds pundit Noel Whelan ripped into Leeds United for their failure to release a statement about Kiko Casilla after the FA’s findings were made public.

After it was confirmed to Leeds that the 33-year-old goalkeeper had been handed an eight-match ban for racially abusing ex-Charlton loanee Jonathan Leko in September, the Whites released an initial statement that slammed the FA for their process.

Casilla was banned based on the “balance of probability” and Leeds also stood by the fact that the ex-Real Madrid player denied making any sort of racist comment towards Leko.

There were a lot of Leeds fans who stood by this on social media but once the FA released their findings, plenty changed their tune and the club itself is yet to speak out.

Leeds’ decision to not release a second statement left manager Marcelo Bielsa in the lurch at his press conference last week when he wasn’t sure how to answer questions about what will happen with Casilla.

Whelan has now spoken out about the lack of a follow-up statement by his former club and is really unhappy with how Leeds have dealt with the matter since the FA’s documents were published.

“Really poor from the club,” the ex-Leeds striker told Football Insider.

“They should come out and put something out regarding the findings. That is really disappointing from the football club that they have stayed quiet about that because the club deserves to put something out there for people to chew on. That is down to the club, they will have their own reasons.

“The fact it was not in the programme or anything from the club is really bad of the football club. You have to be open about these sorts of things you cannot hide behind it.

“They have had plenty of time to put a statement together and it should have come out by now. That is the be-all and end-all of it. They need to come out and give a statement and it should have been done at the weekend.”

You have to agree with Whelan on this.

Casilla is banned for another six matches but what happens after that? Do Leeds allow Bielsa to name a player banned for racism in his squad? Do Leeds terminate his contract? Do they try to sell him in the summer? What happens?

No one knows the official stance of the club and, more worryingly, neither does Bielsa based on what he said last week.

The issue is now that it has been over a week since the FA’s findings were publicised.

Any statement now would be futile and it would just be embarrassing to do it now.

In other Leeds United news, fans are blown away by this “iconic” picture that was captured at the weekend.
