BBC pundit slams Leeds mainstay who 'has got to be looked at' after 1-0 defeat v Wigan

Noel Whelan has slammed Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla for failing to keep out Wigan’s winner at Elland Road on Saturday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side lost 1-0 against the relegation-threatened Latics, who returned to Lancashire with all three points courtesy of a Pablo Hernandez own goal in the second half.

Joe Williams took what seemed to be a harmless corner before it brushed the head of Hernandez as it made its way into the penalty area and looped over Leeds ‘keeper Casilla.

It was hardly Hernandez’s fault but Casilla could have done a lot better to deal with the ball as he had plenty of time to see it and track the movement.

BBC Radio Leeds pundit Whelan has claimed that the Spanish shot-stopper should have dealt with the goal a lot better.

“In my opinion, yes [he has got to get something on that],” Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds’ West Yorkshire Sport on Saturday [4m53s].

“It wasn’t a powerful corner, it’s taken a deflection but you’ve still got plenty of time to watch that ball all the way through.

“He did flap at it. I’m just not sure whether he’s got it wrong. I’ll hold my hands up and apologise if he hasn’t and it’s something he couldn’t do anything about but I think your goalkeeper has got to be looked at there.”

Casilla has made so many mistakes since signing for Leeds.

Although he has been an improvement on past goalkeepers like Felix Weidwald and Bailey Peacock-Farrell, he is still prone to an absolute shocker every other week.

Casilla’s is Leeds’ undisputed first-choice goalkeeper but if he continues to cost the Whites goals like this then Bielsa needs to take a serious look at his spot in the side.

Illan Meslier is a good young goalkeeper who is waiting on the wings to impress.

It would be good to see what he can offer in between the sticks in the Championship.

In other Leeds United news, fans have raved about one Whites player who was ‘MOTM’ in the defeat to Wigan.
