BBC pundit claims Leeds ace answered question hanging over his head in 4-0 win v Hull

BBC pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts has proved his doubters wrong with his performance in the 4-0 win v Hull City on Saturday.

Whelan admitted that he had questioned whether or not the Welsh international could play as a lone striker, but was happy to say he was proved wrong after the Yorkshire derby.

Roberts only came on for 23 minutes in the win but managed to score a brace in an impressive cameo from the 21-year-old.

Whelan believes that Roberts has put himself in a good position to potentially start against Huddersfield on Saturday, although he does need to prove he has more than just the attacking side of his game.

“He got two goals in the space of twenty minutes so that says it all,” he told Football Insider.

“He has proved a lot of people wrong including myself. I did not think he could play through the middle. Two fantastically taken goals. There are going to be question marks now over that starting centre-forward place come the derby game against Huddersfield. He has put himself in a really good position.

“However, it is not just about the goals. Everyone wants him to now be the main striker but that was not a great Hull side. You have to remember the job that Bamford has done for 70 minutes before that.”

Marcelo Bielsa did admit after the Hull clash that he values Roberts very highly at Elland Road, and has now been forced to consider whether he can start games up top in the Championship.

“When one striker scores, of course, that has a high value and after that, the manager considers this,” he said.

Roberts did convert the two chances he had at the KCOM Stadium, and although that is efficiency we haven’t seen watching the Whites in a long time, we expect Patrick Bamford to lead the line against Huddersfield.
