BBC pundit claims Leeds need to get somebody off wage bill, names 23y/o who should be sold

BBC Radio Leeds pundit Noel Whelan has claimed that Leeds United need to trim down their wage bill before the end of the month.

Although Leeds have seen Eddie Nketiah and Jack Clarke have their loan spells terminated at Elland Road, the Whites have welcomed Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig in what is bound to be a costly short-term agreement.

It has not been reported how much of Augustin’s wages are being covered by Leeds but The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has claimed the 22-year-old earns a lot more than Southampton striker Che Adams.

Ex-Leeds striker Whelan has now suggested his former club might need to make some money back before the January transfer window closes.

He believes that cashing in on Under-23s goalkeeper Kamil Miazek, whose contract expires in the summer, could help the Yorkshire giants draw in some funds and reduce their wage bill.

“He has got a lot of potential but we’ve got four goalkeepers now and we don’t need four goalkeepers at the football club,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“If anyone’s going to be leaving it’s him.

“Look, if the club can get this goalkeeper [off the books], who’s probably fourth in the rankings right now, I think it would be good business.

“Once again, a player wants to play – especially at his age – and Leeds United need to get somebody off the wage bill as well. It makes sense.”

Miazek has spent over two years at Leeds but has failed to make a single senior appearance for them.

The 23-year-old has appeared on the bench a number of times but that has been as close he has managed to get to a first-team debut.

It would make sense to cash in on him but not for one second do we believe that selling him will make much difference to the wage bill.

Andrea Radrizzani has run a very tight ship when it’s come to Leeds’ finances and it’s unlikely he would have brought in players this month despite worrying about tipping spending over the edge.

Miazek is unlikely to be earning anywhere near enough to have a significant impact on spending anyway.

Selling the Polish goalkeeper this month makes sense but it’s not going to be a priority.
