BBC Journalist: Leeds duo included in abandoned int’l game due to positive COVID test

It was a whirlwind week for Leeds United duo Charlie Cresswell and Sam Greenwood on England international duty.

The academy players both started for the Three Lions as they took on Scotland under-19s at St George’s Park on Thursday.

With the game at 3-1 to England, it had to be abandoned due to one of the Scottish backroom staff testing positive for COVID-19.

BBC journalist Adam Pope shared an update on his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon, claiming the rearranged game unlikely to take place.

He claimed the positive test will not affect the senior squad, which includes Kalvin Phillips as they take on Wales at Wembley on the same evening.

There is no word on whether or not Greenwood and Cresswell will now have to isolate for up to two weeks, but it will be likely if the second game is abandoned.

Joe Gelhardt was also meant to be included, but an injury picked up against Middlesbrough recently saw him missing out.

Cresswell enjoyed the perfect start to his international career, scoring in the game and catching the eye in the first half.

The defender has caught the eye since jumping up to the under-23s and has even made his senior debut against Hull in the Carabao Cup.

The next game for Mark Jackson’s under-23s is against Reading on the 16th (next Friday) and if the Whites duo are forced to isolate, they will miss the clash.

That would be a massive blow, especially the loss of Greenwood who has scored five goals in four games this season.
