Bamford: Illan Meslier can 'get to the top and stay there'

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has heaped praise on youngster Illan Meslier, saying that he can “get to the top and stay there”.

The 21-year-old took the gloves from Kiko Casilla last season after the veteran was banned for racist abuse.

He’s gone from strength to strength in the Premier League this season.

Talking on the Sky Sports YouTube channel Bamford said of the young keeper, “I think he can go to the top. I think if you look at the French keepers, after [Hugo] Lloris there’s not many who are doing what he’s doing at the level he’s doing it at.

“He’s still young and if you know him he’s a proper funny, goofy and jokey kind of kid, but he’s very good and he knows how good he is as well.

“He’s always working to improve, so he can definitely get to the top and stay there for a good while.”

Leeds signed Meslier on loan first from FC Lorient and then made his transfer permanent in the summer for just £5m.

That’s looking like a serious bargain now for a young keeper who seems to have the football world in front of him.

In February, Meslier broke Joe Hart’s 14-year-old Premier League record for the most clean sheets for a keeper before their 21st birthday.

Leeds fans would love to see a new backup for Meslier signed in the summer but that would necessitate the club moving Casilla on.

There’s been no way back for him since his ban but he’s on big wages and it will be tough to get him off the books.
