Austrian media share extreme reaction to Leeds United star Max Wober in win v Sweden
Leeds United defender Max Wober was praised by the Austrian media for his “strong” 45-minute showing in the 2-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Sweden on Tuesday [20 June].
Midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored two late goals to give his side a comfortable home win over a stubborn but toothless Swede side to put them top of the group on 10 points after four games.
Exit-linked Leeds star Wober didn’t start the encounter but came on after the break to make a telling impact which was praised by the Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten [21 June, page 15].

The media outlet wrote: “Had a top chance right after his substitution at the break.
“Saved the back once in extreme need.
“Strong.”
Austrian relief
Wober expressed his relief recently at being away from Leeds United and Elland Road given the uncertainty at the club following their disappointing relegation from the Premier League.
And the former Red Bull Salzburg defender certainly showed freedom from the West Yorkshire shackles after an inspired showing for his country.

Although many players let themselves down in the relegation run-in, Wober was one of the few to stand up and make himself heard.
Despite only arriving in the winter window, the Austrian quickly took up a leadership role and looked at home immediately in the relentless and fast-paced Premier League.
Wober is certainly one of the few players at the club that can hold his head high after what’s happened over the past couple of months, and with the Whites set to allow some of their key performers to depart this summer, the Austrian may well be returning to the top level before long.
If Leeds United can keep hold of the defender this summer, it certainly will be a job well done. He is a cut above the Championship level and is surely expected to have plenty of suitors from both England and abroad over the next couple of months.
In other Leeds United news, a comprehensive transfer update appears to have ended the chances of the club losing an “absolutely fantastic” talent to an imminent bid.
