Atlas forward Julian Quinones on his way to join Leeds United

Leeds United appear to have won the race to sign Atlas FC forward Julian Quinones, as per Gerardo Melin.

The WDeportes and El Universal journalist, wrote on Twitter on 29 July that Atlas are going to lose their “feared” footballer in their squad, as he is now on his way to join Leeds.

Foot Mercato reported on 28 July that the Whites are showing interest in him, and it seems they have now won the race for his signature.

Merlin wrote on Twitter: “They announce that Julián Quiñones is going to Leeds United. The Atlas will lose the most unbalanced and feared footballer on their squad.”

Good move?

Having missed out on Charles De Ketelaere, it seems the Whites have quickly moved on to other targets.

This has been an excellent transfer window for the Whited where they managed to land as many as seven new players.

However, there could be one or two more additions, as Leeds look to bolster their forward department.

The 25-year-old enjoyed his best season to date in 2021-22 where he helped the club win the Mexican Clausura division as well as the Champion of Champions game.

The Colombian can play as a striker as also as a winger, and therefore his versatility could be an asset for the club.

Jesse Marsch has Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt as two strikers at his disposal, but the former missed a chunk of action last season. Gelhardt is still very raw and needs to progress gradually.

Quinones will be a complete unknown for players, coaches, managers and fans, and therefore there is an element of risk attached to it.

At the moment, it’s not clear what has been the nature of the deal. Victor Orta has a reputation for signing hidden gems, and it remains to be seen if he has just found one.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have submitted a fresh bid to sign their first-choice target this summer as a Champions League club has pulled out of the deal.
