Leeds United haven’t given up on getting something from Brighton in this transfer window.
After getting a flat rejection over a move for Ben White, Leeds are now attempting to sign 18-year-old Haydon Roberts from the south coast side.
According toan update from Athletic journalist David Ornstein on Monday morning, Leeds tabled a bid for the centre-back “late last week”.
However, Brighton are playing just as hard over the youngster as they were over White.
Ornstein claims Brighton have rejected the bid and added that they are “adamant that a defender will not be sold”.
Brighton not playing ball
Brighton refused to sell Ben White to Leeds and said that they would never countenance strengthening a direct rival.
That could be the reason behind refusing to do business over Roberts, too.
It seems a bit churlish after Leeds turned White into a superstar but if that’s their stance, there’s not a lot Leeds can do.
It’s proving a real struggle to get a new centre-back in.
White is a Brighton player, Josko Gvardiol looks set to move to RB Leipzig and Roberts appears to be a no-go.
It’s a shame. We think Roberts could have provided good cover for Leeds.
He made his second senior appearance for Brighton in the EFL Cup last week and was the recipient of a very positive write-up in the Daily Mail earlier this year.
In a Secret Scout report it was said: “It was his reading of the game that impressed me most. He maximised his passing and assessed situations quickly. He looked a leader despite being one of the youngest on the field.”
It looks like it’s back to the drawing board for Leeds, who won’t want to waste a lot of time chasing another Brighton player.
