Archie Gray injury news as ankle problem emerges at Leeds United

Leeds United sensation Archie Gray has been kept out of action by an ankle injury after a scan revealed damage and swelling on the joint, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

In a report on Thursday (16 February), the outlet revealed Gray has been back on the grass for a couple of weeks and is expected to return to full training soon.

This comes after an initial toe injury from stubbing it at home, with surgery not the answer to the latest problem due to his young age after looking into recovery and rehabilitation.

Gray, 16, has been limited to just four appearances for the Under 21s this season after picking up an injury in mid-September.

All of those four appearances were starts as the side began their Premier League 2 season with a nine-game unbeaten run. He also featured on the bench for the senior side’s Premier League opener against Wolves easier this season.

About time

Gray is one of the club’s hottest prospects and his failure to make more than four appearances this term is incredibly frustrating.

Right now, he needs game time. There is no better thing for a young player than to be playing regularly and getting used to the rigours of men’s football.

It would be hoped that after a full season after a full season of Under 21s football, he might be ready for a loan move to a League Two side next season.

That is the natural career progression for a player of Gray’s quality and potential. There is no need to rush the youngster by any means but a prolonged period on the sidelines at his age can stall progression completely.

Hopefully, this isn’t the case with Gray. A run of games at the end of the season would be hugely beneficial ahead of what could prove to be a career-making or career-breaking pre-season.

He has at least another season to impress after singing a two-year scholarship deal with Leeds United back in September.
