Jason Cundy claims Leeds defence 'appalling' after 3-0 win v Soton

talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy doubled down on his attack on Leeds United after their 3-0 win against Southampton on Tuesday night.

Despite keeping a second clean sheet in four games in the Premier League, Cundy called the Leeds defence “appalling” and said that Southampton could have been two or three up in the first couple of minutes.

It’s a topic that he’s brought up before.

Talking on talkSPORT, Cundy said, “They’ve proved and shown what they can do.

‘They can do this but they can also get beat 3-0. Where they are in the league probably sums them up, they’ll win a lot of games, they’ll lose a lot of games.

“They are a really easy-on-the-eye, good-to-watch team.

“But Southampton could have been two or three up in the first three minutes.

“Bielsa is a manager who has proved he can score goals, they’re a very dangerous team.

“Their defensive record is appalling but they’ve scored more goals than Chelsea, it shows you the sort of team they are.”

Appalling pundit

Cundy is like a dog with a bone, he just won’t give up on this line of attack.

He will never mention the fact that Leeds have played pretty much the whole season with two senior international centre-backs out.

You can’t talk about Liverpool without their injury problems at the back being the focal point of the discussion.

Diego Llorente was back last night and should add stability to a backline that’s been stretched way too thin this season.

You won’t find any team in the top-flight that won’t suffer from losing two of their senior centre-backs.

Cundy ignores that. He also ignores the fact that Illan Meslier has become the first Premier League keeper under 21 to record eight clean sheets in a season.

He also ignores the fact that under Bielsa last season, Leeds had the best defensive record in the Championship. It’s just not fair to say that Bielsa doesn’t care about conceding.

Leeds are 10th in the Premier League. West Brom and Fulham are looking odds-on to head straight back down to the Championship.

Leeds are almost safe with 13 games of the season left.

But Cundy still has to use the word appalling. We could say the same about his level of punditry.
